Lagan Search & Rescue is an acute water rescue and independent lifeboat service, dedicated to the seaward side of River Lagan in Belfast and its immediate environment.
Our charity provides a dedicated emergency response in agreement with Her Majesty's Coastguard, working partners and key stakeholders. Lagan Search & Rescue has developed an emergency Quayside Response Team that is tasked and co-ordinated by the local Coast Guard Operations Centre, CGOC Belfast.
Lagan Search & Rescue proved an independent lifeboat service, trained and equipped to levels that exceed the nationally approved standards. Our volunteer crews offer a Declared lifeboat response 24/7, 365 days of the year. This dedicated service can be tasked by pager, any time of day or night. Lagan Search & Rescue operate an Atlantic 21 - the oldest operational lifeboat in the UK or Ireland.
LSAR has also developed a pioneering Rescue Swimmer Corps - highly trained and committed, these volunteers can deploy from boat, bank, quayside or structure to assist those in times of distress. Rescue Swimmers are trained to internationallly recognised standards and were recently deployed to the Eastern Aegean Sea where they provided assistance to the Migrant Offshore Aid Station. During this mission, LSAR volunteers were involved in the rescue and recovery of 246 refugees who were in peril or who had been shipwrecked on the jagged shores of the Greek Islands.
All volunteers from Lagan Search & Rescue also undertake mandatory training as part of our overarching Flood Response Team. LSAR is the only accredited Rescue 3 (Europe) Training Provider in Northern Ireland and as such, we work with others to develop flood response capbilities that will benefit all in our communities.
Lagan Search & Rescue is also developing our Kayak Rescue Corps with recognised, externally accredited training and all operations are supported by LSAR's Emergency Medical Response Team.
All of these services are offered free of cost by our volunteers in the hope that we will help make Belfast a safer place for all.
